Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut.
After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. It really helped draw me into the story.Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. References galore to a time in town where I’d guess the main character wasn’t much older than the kids of IT if at all. The library that Bill designed that was eventually built? Mentioned and in town. The gay young man that dies in IT? The main character remembers that and mentions it in the towns history. I also love the fact that there was enough continuity between IT and Insomnia that I could take some joy in the references. I loved seeing a view of Derry, Maine that wasn’t the view of it given to us in the events of IT. They offer him the goal of saving a young boy who will one day be a world changing artist and can’t pass at the age of 4 in an abortion clinic attack. He eventually begins seeing things and slowly learns through the events of the book that a group of beings are basically preventing him from sleeping so he can see and interact with their plane of existence. He also doesn’t expect that any of his friends are also struggling to sleep and weathers their comments. We start out with the main character having a weird bit of insomnia after the passing of his wife and he’s trying every home cure in the book to see if he can get sleep again. The book starts out a little slow I must admit.
